Shipwrecks of Buffalo City: The Stuart Star

Built in Newcastle in 1926, with a mass of close to 12,000 tons, the Stuart Star was a twin-screw steamer of the Blue Star line on voyage Clyde to Melbourne with general cargo.

On 17 December 1937 she was wrecked off East London's Hood Point during a dense fog. There were 15 passengers on board, with a crew of 93.

The ship was carried broadside onto the rocks and became wedged so fast that all attempts to haul her off failed. She was badly holed and water poured into three of her forward holds. Her crew abandoned her immediately. There were no casualties.
